The Dark Feminine Series continues.
Lucy Tate will be going deep into the mythology, origins, and working with Sekhmet.
Sekhmet is one of the oldest deities in the Egyptian pantheon, with roots extending back to the Old Kingdom (c. 2686–2181 BCE). She is most often depicted as a woman with the head of a lioness, crowned with a solar disk and uraeus (rearing cobra), signifying her connection to the sun god Ra and her divine authority.
As the mythological daughter of Ra, Sekhmet was created to punish humanity for their disobedience and failure to uphold Ma’at, the principle of cosmic order. Her destructive power is prominently featured in the “Destruction of Mankind” myth, wherein Ra sends her to enact divine retribution. Her wrath is so uncontrollable that Ra ultimately tricks her into drinking a mixture of beer and red ochre to sedate her bloodlust. Upon awakening, Sekhmet is transformed from avenger into protector, later developing associations with healing, fertility, and medicine.
In modern worship, Sekhmet has emerged as an archetype of sacred feminine rage, empowered embodiment, and transformational healing. She is invoked in rituals to reclaim personal power, setting boundaries, and navigating emotional or physical trauma.
We look forward to having you in class!
